Fair Housing Act: Disability Nondiscrimination, New Construction Requirements, and Reasonable Accommodations and Reasonable Modifications

Objectives: The Disability Rights Program provides participants with a history of the development of laws providing protections for persons with disabilities, with particular focus on prohibitions against discrimination under the Fair Housing Act. This course will describe provisions impacting housing programs of Federal financial assistance and those applying to housing generally, and it will provide information to assist participants in understanding the interplay between these laws.

Participants will learn who disabled persons are within the meaning of Federal laws. They will also learn the new construction multifamily requirements of the Fair Housing Act and the accessibility requirements applicable to new and rehabilitated Federal assisted multifamily housing. In addition, a major focus of the course will address the Fair Housing Act requirements that make it unlawful to refuse to make reasonable accommodations and to permit disabled persons to make reasonable modifications to premises.
