Grant Writing for PHAs (e-Learning)

Overview: Public Housing and Redevelopment Agencies have had to weather reduced subsidies from HUD.  As a result, these agencies must design and implement new strategies designed to replace lost resources while simultaneously creating new funding streams.

In response to these new fiscal realities, NAHRO Professional Development developed its Grant Writing for PHAs e-Learning. These online, interactive sessions begin with Grant Writing Part I: Introduction to Grant Writing for PHAs, which focuses on how to get started from the perspective of identifying potential funding sources. Day 2 continues with Grant Writing Part II: Self Assessment, which focuses on developing a process designed to guide the writer/submitter through the planning, development, and construction of proposals that ultimately lead to funding.

Description PART 1: INTRODUCTION
Focuses on how to get started from the perspective of identifying potential funding sources and then how to
begin the process of putting a grant together.

Objectives:

  • Understand the importance of research and the all-important Executive Summary

  • Learn the six basic steps to obtaining grant funding; leveraging assets; appealing to foundations; how to write a statement of need; why uniqueness is important; and much more!

Description PART 2: SELF-ASSESSMENT
For those developing and writing grants today, a cardinal rule is to build a system of self-assessment into the process.
The importance of the self-assessment in a successful grant-writing effort cannot be overstated.

A grant writer’s capacity for self-assessment will ultimately inform every part of a competitive grant writing effort, including:

  • Answering questions as to how progress is tracked;
  • Determining whether the intentions of the applicant, the purpose of the grant, and the mission of the funder are in sync; and
  • Answering the question of how the grant is creating sustainability beyond the life of initial or start-up funding.

Logic Model

Federal, state and local government and foundations across the country are increasingly requiring the use of logic models in their grant applications. Depending on the level of complexity required, this requirement could be a major stumbling block, especially with looming deadlines.

This training aims to unlock the mystery surrounding the development and use of logic models.

Objectives:

  • Why logic models are important;
  • How logic models are used;
  • How to develop a winning logic model;
  • Common mistakes and how to avoid them; and
  • What funders are looking for by requiring the use of a logic model
