Energy Audits
Objectives: This e-learning will cover the following topics: sections of a good energy audit report, the requirements for selecting a firm, the minimum requirements for technical analysis, benchmarking, potential measures, types of calculations, and the software available for energy analysis.
Topics
A. Sections of a Good Energy Audit Report
- Utility Analysis, benchmarking usage
- Existing conditions
- ECM calculations, discussion (should include est. cost, savings, payback, discussion of interactive effects)
- Prioritize ECMs based on payback, recommended measures
B. Requirements for Selecting a Firm
- Similar experience
- Trained / knowledgeable of building science, technology
- Sample report (usable format, relevant data, useful conclusions)
C. Minimum Requirements for Technical Analysis
- Uses industry recognized approach (ASHRAE, Nat’l labs, etc.)
- Calibrate models based on actual usage
D. Benchmarking
- Minimum of 12 months billing data (consumption + cost)
- Include agency paid + tenant paid (allowances)
- Normalize consumption based on area, occupants
- Compare properties within agency, against other agencies
E. Potential Measures, Types of Calculations
- Lighting
- Water
- DHW
- HVAC
- Building Envelope
- Operational savings
- Renewables
F. Available Software for Energy Analysis
- Perform in-house vs. outsourcing
- Start-up costs, training requirements
- Audit SW: capabilities, limitations
- Benchmarking SW: capabilities, limitations
