Innovations in Hiring: Finding the Best Candidate with the Appropriate Behaviors

No More 'Other Duties As May Be Prescribed'!

Do you feel like your organization is finding employee training and development initiatives becoming more expensive, while producing only marginal results? An often overlooked reason for this dilemma is that new hires are not really well matched to core aspects of their job’s requirements. Not only does this shortcoming increase the need for and ineffectiveness of training and development efforts – while increasing their cost - it also requires much closer supervision. The end result often is an organization with high levels of demotivation and low levels of productivity.

For over a decade, many successful organizations have added competency-based hiring and selection tools to improve the effectiveness of their hiring decisions. Their effectiveness had been proven by experience, and frequently expanded into competency-based management systems. Employees whose competencies are well aligned with those required for effective performance are found to be easier to train, with learning better retained. Well-trained employees will tend to more effectively carry out their duties. The net outcome to the organization is improved productivity from more motivated staffs.

Elements of competency-based administration are introduced in NAHRO’s new High Performance Management and Executive Management and Leadership training programs, components of the Professional Development System. This e-Learning program is an effective companion piece to that covered in the other programs – either as an introduction to the concepts or an expansion of principles covered in the other programs. It covers basic concepts of competency-based hiring and selection, and walks through the steps involved in integrating them into present practices.

Objectives:

  • Define the concept of Competency-Based Hiring and Selection, and its function in a Competency-Based Management system
  • Explore the definition and uses of Competencies in the Hiring and Selection process
  • Develop a Position Description format that incorporates Competencies
  • Practice developing a comprehensive Position Description that includes key Competencies essential to high performance in the position

The program will cover:

  • Knowing the Position’s Requirements
  • Designing the Interview
  • Conducting Candidate Interviews
  • Comparing and Evaluating Candidates
  • Making the Hiring Selection

Participants will be given the opportunity to integrate competency-based concepts into a real-world position description. They will also practice formulating interview questions that are designed to probe how well candidates match up with the essential requirements of the position they’re being considered for.
