HUD Secretary Julian Castro to Open NAHRO Summer Conference in Austin, Texas
(Washington, D.C. July 20, 2015) - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro will speak at the Opening Plenary Session for the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials’ (NAHRO) Summer Conference in Austin, Texas on July 30 at 8 a.m.
As a 23,000-member association of affordable housing administrators and commissioners, NAHRO is pleased to have Secretary Castro as the conference’s opening speaker.
“The Summer Conference is the ideal place to go and make sure you’re current on the issues that matter most,” says NAHRO CEO Saul Ramirez. “You’ll be able to choose from 25 sessions, to engage with thought-provoking and inspiring speakers, plus interact one-on-one with award-winning organizations sharing their best practices from throughout the nation. The conference, entitled Building Communities Together: Innovation and Inspiration, will take place at the new JW Marriot Austin hotel in downtown from July 29 to August 1. It will feature more than 25 sessions on current and emerging issues, best practices, and challenges facing the housing and redevelopment industry. Attendees will also learn about innovative programs and services from award-winning agencies at the Awards of Merit Program ceremony, tour housing and community development programs offered by the Housing Authority of the City of Austin, be able to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and attend the Commissioner’s Fundamentals seminar.
The conference also features special guests such as Lourdes M. Castro Ramirez, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, of the Office of Public & Indian Housing at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, who will attend the kick-off reception July 29 at 5:30 p.m. and Herman Boone, the former TC Williams High School football coach who inspired the movie Remember the Titans, who will speak at the Closing Plenary Session on August 1 at 9 a.m.
The NAHRO Summer Conference also offers a community service opportunity through NAHRO’s national public affairs campaign, Housing America. Staff and members will host a game night July 31 at the Lakeside Apartments for 164 seniors and disabled persons.
