Become More Active in NAHROHave you ever wanted to increase your involvement in NAHRO by serving on a committee, helping to plan a conference, serving as a conference speaker, teaching as a member of the NAHRO faculty, or gaining the networking opportunities that active participation in NAHRO brings? Now is the time. While National NAHRO elects new officers and makes new appointments to its standing and national committees in the fall of odd-numbered years, there continues to be some new opportunities for leadership and participation throughout the NAHRO structure-at the chapter, region, and national levels. NAHRO's organizational structure is like a pyramid. Forty-three state and local chapters form the base and channel information and ideas to NAHRO's eight regional councils. In turn, regional councils send representatives to the national Board of Governors and to the national committees. The structure at each of the three levels is nearly identical. Each has a Board and five standing committees: Commissioners, Community Revitalization and Development, Housing, Member Services, and Professional Development. Some regions and chapters have recently added International Committees to correspond to the International Committee at the national level. In addition, ad hoc committees-dealing with Legislation, Budget, and Program Planning- also are found at many levels. The best way to become more actively involved is to begin at the chapter level where your concerns and ideas can be considered and taken by the chapter's representative -maybe it's you- to the Region. Additionally, most appointments to the national committees and the Board are made at the regional level. Regional Boards and committees deliberate the concerns brought forward from the chapters to the Region. The region votes upon these concerns and brings them to the national committees for additional discussion and recommendations to the Board of Governors. As a membership organization, NAHRO relies heavily on its volunteer associates to help accomplish its mission. We count on associates to keep us informed of local issues and the effect of proposed regulations and legislation on housing and community development programs. There are never enough volunteers to do all that could be done, so we encourage you to participate. To serve on a national committee, you must be an associate of a national Agency member or an Allied Individual member. Details on how to join NAHRO are our Web site: http://www.nahro.org/join/index.cfm . Let us know if you want to participate in NAHRO by completing and returning the following form that will be forwarded to your chapter and regional presidents. Questions may be directed to Sylvia Moore Bowen at sbowen@nahro.org . |
