HUD Secretary, NAHRO Visit Pennsylvania Housing Authority
HUD Secretary Mel Martinez today visited the Harrisburg Housing Authority at the invitation of Rep. George Gekas (R-PA). The secretary toured several housing developments with housing authority personnel - then met with local officials from the HHA, the Lebanon Housing and Redevelopment Authority of Lebanon County, PA and other housing authorities in Pennsylvania.
Congressman Gekas arranged the meeting after NAHRO members visited his office during the association's Legislative Conference March 18-20.
Secretary Martinez and Rep. Gekas made brief remarks, which were followed by a lengthy question and answer session. NAHRO Executive Director Saul N. Ramirez, Jr. attended and expressed the association's appreciation that the secretary had taken the time to visit local officials. Ramirez also expressed his agreement with the secretary's characterization of the vast majority of local housing agency officials as honest and hardworking.
"The secretary made it clear that he wants to have an expanded dialogue with NAHRO concerning issues of mutual interest," Ramirez said. "We fully intend to pursue that dialogue as soon as possible."
