Press Event: Families in Peril: The Threat to the Housing Choice Voucher Program

Contact: Liz Hennessy, 202-289-3500 ext. 280 or lhennessy@nahro.org

WHERE: State Room, J.W. Marriott
1331 Pennsylvania

WHEN: Monday, March 15, Noon-1:00

WHAT: The president's 2005 budget proposal includes a change to the Section 8 voucher program that could leave more than a million families without the subsidy they need to afford housing. Called the "Flexible Voucher Program," the proposal would cut funding for the program by nearly $2 billion.

The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials is hosting a press event to help spread the word about the effects this proposal would have if it becomes a reality. Housing agency directors from across the nation will speak briefly about the change's immediate impact on the families they serve, about the future of the Section 8 program, and about the urgency of the affordability crisis across the nation. Statistics for the projected funding cut and the number of families affected will be provided.

Panelists will be Sammie Szabo, executive director, Housing Authority of the City of Upland, CA; Alex Morales, executive director of the Hialeah Housing Authority (FL); and Jody Geese, executive director, Belmont Metropolitan Housing Authority. Also in attendance will be James M. Inglis, NAHRO President and executive director of the Livonia (MI) Housing Commission and Saul Ramirez, executive director of NAHRO.

Here are stats representing the projected amount of funding lost and the number of families who would lose services. Housing authority representatives from many of these states will attend the press event. NAHRO also can provide information on the rest of the United States.
