CHCI Panel Presents Recommendations on Hispanic Homeownership

Contact: Liz Hennessy, 202-289-3500 ext. 280 or lhennessy@nahro.org

News Advisory:

WHO: Saul N. Ramirez, executive director of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials

WHAT: Will present the suggestions of a panel on Hispanic homeownership to attendees of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Issues Conference

WHEN: Tuesday, Sept. 14, 9 to 11 a.m.

WHERE: Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Issues Conference
Washington Convention Center
Washington, D.C.

Ramirez moderated a panel on "Increasing Hispanic Homeownership: Barriers and Strategies for Success" on Sept. 13 as part of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's 2004 Issues Conference. The panel was convened by Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.) and included housing experts from the National Council of La Raza, the National Housing Conference, the Housing Assistance Council, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation and the New York Mortgage Coalition.

This morning, Ramirez will present key issues raised by the panel to Hispanic members of Congress. Recommendations will include:

  • Creating a consolidated source of existing housing counseling and financial literacy services that is easy to understand and navigate, available in Spanish and widely distributed.
  • Implementing a comprehensive plan for preserving existing and building new affordable housing so Latino families can afford to purchase a home in the communities where they work.
  • Working on federal incentives to support the affordable housing effort of states and localities.

Ramirez was formerly HUD deputy secretary and mayor of Laredo, Texas. He is available for comment. Please contact Liz Hennessy at 202-289-3500 ext. 280.
