Awards of Merit Honor Housing and Community Development Initiatives Contact: Liz Hennessy, 202-289-3500 ext. 280 or lhennessy@nahro.org WASHINGTON, Sept. 22 - The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) recently recognized 314 housing and community development agencies across the United States with Awards of Merit. The annual awards program recognizes agencies for innovative housing and community development projects, programs and services. Housing and community development agencies play a critical role in communities across the nation. In addition to the basic challenges of providing desirable affordable housing and maintain thriving communities, these agencies often face even larger operational challenges. Agencies must sustain existing programs and develop new initiatives with limited funding while adhering to ever-changing regulations. Despite the obstacles they face, many local agencies have succeeded in developing innovative programs that find creative ways to provide services essential to their communities. A catalog with profiles and contact information for the 314 award winners is available online at: http://www.nahro.org/awards/2004MeritAwards.pdf The award-winning programs demonstrate the wide variety of ways in which agencies have approached their communities' needs. They include welfare-to-work programs, summer camps, education and job training efforts as well as neighborhood revitalization and homeownership initiatives. This year's winners have created affordable housing in historic buildings, provided Internet training and access to jobseekers, taught young girls the basics of a healthy lifestyle, and helped families gather money for security deposits and moving fees. "I am proud to recognize these agencies and the difference they make in the lives of the people and communities they serve," NAHRO President Jim Inglis said. "Our members are continually raising the bar on the quality of services offered to communities across the United States." NAHRO, a member organization of 21,000 housing and community development
agencies and professionals, developed the awards program in 1989 and,
to date, has issued over 5,000 awards to agencies developing innovative
services and programs to fulfill their missions. The Awards of Merit
were given at NAHRO's 2004 Summer Conference in Detroit.
