Contact: Liz Hennessy, 202-289-3500 ext. 280 or lhennessy@nahro.org

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 - The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials has selected Lawrence Ramashamole as the recipient of its 2004 John D. Lange Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements in international exchange in the housing and community development field. The award will be presented Oct. 13 at NAHRO's National Conference and Exhibition in Baltimore, Md.

Ramashamole has been instrumental in the social housing movement in South Africa, assisting the African National Congress to structure policies and specific plans for efficient housing initiatives. A past president and vice president of the Institute for Housing of South Africa, he now heads a consulting firm that works on housing policy framework in the low- to moderate-income sector. Ramashamole is a member of the UK's Chartered Institute of Housing, the chairman of HAEL, an East London rental housing company, a member of the Institute Directors of South Africa, and a former managing director of South Africa's Social Housing Foundation.

He is praised as an agent of change and strong leader who has seen much success starting new initiatives. He has delivered multiple papers on the state of housing in South Africa to international audiences. He has spearheaded initiatives with NAHRO, Canadian Cooperative Housing, the Rooftops Canada Foundation, CHF International, and the Chartered Institute of Housing.

"Lawrence's long record of service in South Africa and in other countries is truly noteworthy," NAHRO President Jim Inglis said. "I'm proud to honor the remarkable achievements he has made in housing and the social movement in his country."

The John D. Lange Award recognizes someone in the housing and community development field who has made an outstanding contribution toward international understanding and exchange of international experience. It was established in 1983 in the name of John D. Lange, executive director of NAHRO from 1951 to 1970, who actively participated throughout his career in international exchange and, in his retirement, carried out executive service assignments in Argentina, Indonesia and the Philippines.
