Housing, Community Development Leaders Urge Congress to Support Communities

Contact: Liz Hennessy, 202-289-3500 ext. 280

News Advisory:

WHO: NAHRO President Jim Inglis, executive director of the Livonia (Mich.) Housing Commission

WHAT: Will speak at a press conference on Capitol Hill to oppose the administration's proposed elimination of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D-Md.), DC Mayor Anthony Williams, Clarksburg, W.V., Council Member Jim Hunt, Akron, Ohio, Mayor Don Plusquellic and a representative from NACo will also speak.

WHEN: 11:45 a.m., Tuesday, March 15

WHERE: 2247 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC

The press conference will highlight the efforts of NAHRO members and National League of Cities members who will both be on Capitol Hill Tuesday urging members of Congress to support the nation's communities.

Significant issues NAHRO members will take to the Hill include:

  • the administration's proposal to eliminate 18 community and economic development programs, including the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, Brownfields and the Community Services Block Grant program

  • despite an estimated $18 billion backlog of capital repair needs, the president's budget for FY 2006 requests 20 percent less funding for public housing than Congress provided for FY 2001. The budget cuts the Capital Fund by nearly 10 percent and eliminates and rescinds FY 2005 funding for HOPE VI revitalization of severely distressed public housing.

Inglis and NAHRO Executive Director Saul Ramirez, former HUD Deputy Secretary, will be available for comment at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning before the press conference. Call Liz Hennessy at 202-841-6335 to arrange interviews.
