NAHRO Commends Senate Banking Committee Vote on Legislation to Better Coordinate Senior Housing Needs

Contact: Liz Hennessy, 202-289-3500 ext. 280

WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 -- The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) applauds the Senate Banking Committee for voting to establish an Interagency Council on Housing and Service Needs of Seniors. The legislation, introduced by Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D-Md.), passed by voice vote on July 28. It is scheduled for full Senate floor consideration following the August recess.

The legislation will help coordinate housing programs and related services and health care for seniors so that they have access to services to help them remain independent for as long as possible. The Interagency Council will be comprised of the secretaries of federal agencies that operate programs for seniors including, HUD, HHS, DOT, Social Security, the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services, and the Administration on Aging.

Developing effective coordination between the numerous federal agencies involved with housing, services and health care for seniors is vitally important to low-income, frail elderly and their families. Not only do effective linkages between housing, services and health care respond to consumer preferences, but they are cost-effective with significant savings to older persons and taxpayers at the state, local, and national levels.

"Senior citizens rely on supportive services to help them remain independent for as long as possible," said NAHRO Executive Director Saul Ramirez. "This council will help government agencies work together to coordinate services and provide seniors with needed aid in their homes, where they need it most."
