Press RoomNAHRO's John D. Lange Award Given to David A. Smith
WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 -- The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials has selected David A. Smith as the recipient of its 2005 John D. Lange Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements in international exchange in the housing and community development field. The award will be presented Oct. 8 at NAHRO's National Conference and Exhibition in Chicago, IL. Smith is the founder of the Affordable Housing Institute (AHI), a private, nonprofit consultancy that develops sustainable housing financial ecosystems worldwide. A respected and sought-after affordable housing consultant, Smith has provided high-quality analysis to Congress, the Millennial Housing Commission, the Congressional Budget Office, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and others. With the founding of AHI in 2001, Smith put his experience and expertise to work in the international arena, developing the International Affordable Housing Finance Network, a worldwide community of thought leadership in housing finance. Smith has been very active with affordable housing issues in the United Kingdom, including the conceptualization and design of the Housing and Regeneration Tax Credit (HART). Together with the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies, Smith and the AHI secured the participation of South Africa's top housing officials in the "More Than Shelter: Housing as an Instrument of Social and Economic Development" conference. The conference included representatives from Kenya, Thailand, Mexico, and South Africa, as well as recognized global housing finance experts and global financial leaders. Smith is a member of The Citizens' Housing and Planning Association, The National Association of Affordable Housing Lenders, The National Affordable Housing Management Association, The Council for Affordable and Rural Housing, and The National Council of State Housing Agencies. He is praised for effectively combining the roles of practitioner and theoretician, participant and policymaker, and for hard work and a commitment to affordable housing that are of considerable advantage to the global community. "David's dedication to creating affordable housing worldwide is truly remarkable," said NAHRO President Jim Inglis. "NAHRO is proud to honor his international efforts and achievements." The John D. Lange Award recognizes persons in the housing and community development
field who have made outstanding contributions toward international understanding
and exchange of international experience. It was established in 1983 in the
name of John D. Lange, executive director of NAHRO from 1951 to 1970, who actively
participated throughout his career in international exchange and, in his retirement,
carried out executive service assignments in Argentina, Indonesia and the Philippines. |
