WASHINGTON, Nov. 2-- Donald J. Cameron, Chief Executive Officer of The
Housing Authority of the City of Charleston (CHA), has assumed leadership for
the next two years of the nation's oldest housing and community development
association. Cameron was elected President of the National Association of Housing
and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) in Chicago on October 9.
Cameron has held his position as CEO of the CHA since 1980, and prior to that
served as Assistant Executive Director. The CHA provides the day-to-day operational
support for 1,383 public housing households located throughout Charleston and
1,317 Section 8 participants living in private accommodations, as well as operating
a Housing Finance Agency.
As NAHRO President, Cameron said the ultimate sign of success for him and other
newly-elected NAHRO officers will be if, at the end of the two-year term, "life
is a little bit better for those disadvantaged and challenged in the United
States of America."
Cameron, who just completed a two-year term as NAHRO's Senior Vice President,
has been a NAHRO member for more than 25 years.
The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, established
in 1933, is a membership organization of 21,000 housing and community development
agencies and professionals throughout the United States whose mission is to
create affordable housing and safe, viable communities that enhance the quality
of life for all Americans, especially those of low- and moderate-income. NAHRO's
membership administers more than 3 million housing units for 7.6 million people.
