October 10: The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials
has selected Rodney Dykes as the recipient of its 2006 John D. Lange Award in
recognition of his outstanding achievements in international exchange in the
housing and community development field. The award will be presented Oct. 15
at NAHRO's National Conference and Exhibition in Atlanta, Ga.
Dykes is Managing Director of Rodney Dykes Housing Services Ltd (RDHS Ltd)
and Deputy Chair of the Liverpool Housing Action Trust in Liverpool, England.
He began his career in housing in 1960 in local housing authorities, where he
concentrated on housing and health issues as a practicing Environmental Health
Officer. Dykes then moved on to become Deputy Chief Executive of the Merseyside
Improved Houses from 1971-1976 and the North British Housing Association from
1976 - 1980. In 1980, Dykes established RDHS Ltd, a housing and regeneration
consulting company. Dykes' understanding of community development corporations
has led RDHA Ltd to submissions to government agencies promoting urban revitalization
and the need for public/private partnerships.
A regular member of the U.K. delegation at the Tri-Country Conference, Dykes
has presented at the conference many times and helped organize and plan for
when the conference came to Liverpool. He has also attended many NAHRO national
conferences, and has spoken to other delegates about housing in the UK. Through
the exchange of professional and discussion papers, as well as through professional
institutions, Dykes has developed particular connections with housing professionals
in Canada and the U.S. He has also frequently visited Denmark and Sweden to
promote worldwide issues on physical standards of social housing provision and
the economic environment in which not-for-profits operate.
Affiliations include the professional institution of Environmental Health,
which awarded Dykes a fellowship in 1985, and the Chartered Institute of Housing,
where he gained fellowship status in 1984. In 2003, Dykes was awarded the Prix
International Award by the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association for his
contributions to the housing industry in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K.
"In Mr. Dykes' long and distinguished career he is known for solving serious
and seemingly intractable problems," said NAHRO President Don Cameron.
"He is extremely good at instilling confidence and commitment in those
with whom he serves and labors alongside."
The John D. Lange Award recognizes persons in the housing and community development
field who have made outstanding contributions toward international understanding
and exchange of international experience. It was established in 1983 in the
name of John D. Lange, executive director of NAHRO from 1951 to 1970, who actively
participated throughout his career in international exchange and, in his retirement,
carried out executive service assignments in Argentina, Indonesia and the Philippines.
