NAHRO Honors Thomas Manion with John D. Lange Award

WASHINGTON,October 25-- The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment
Officials (NAHRO) has selected Dr. Thomas Manion, Jr. as the recipient of its
2007 John D. Lange Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements in international
exchange in the housing and community development field. The award will be presented
Oct. 28 at NAHRO's National Conference and Exhibition in San Diego, Calif.
Dr. Manion is Chief Executive of Irwell Valley Housing Authority in Manchester,
UK. Prior to his appointment to Irwell Valley, Dr. Manion worked with housing
associations in Holland, the U.S., Hong Kong and China. He also served in the
House of Commons as a Front Bench Adviser on the 1988 Housing Act, Director
of High Peak Housing Trust, and Special Adviser to Bolton Arm's Length Organization.
He currently chairs the Community Foundation Greater Manchester and is a columnist
for Inside Housing.
Under Dr. Manion's tenure, Irwell Valley Housing Authority has more than tripled
in size and earned a reputation as a frontrunner of modern methods and innovations
in the industry. The organization has been awarded Landlord of the Year and
Outstanding Achievement in Housing in the United Kingdom from the Chartered
Institute of Housing. Dr. Manion also initiated the European Rewards Network,
an international group of housing organizations that meet twice a year, in 2003.
Personal accolades include the Cabinet Office's Public Servant of the Year in
2003, fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and Distinguished Personal Fellow
of the Chartered Institute of Housing.
"Dr. Manion's credentials and successes have been well recognized in his
career, but we also honor his infectious energy and drive," NAHRO President
Don Cameron said. "Dr. Manion knows only one speed, and that is 'all out'
for those challenged in society."
The John D. Lange Award recognizes persons in the housing and community development
field who have made outstanding contributions toward international understanding
and exchange of international experience. It was established in 1983 in the
name of John D. Lange, executive director of NAHRO from 1951 to 1970, who actively
participated throughout his career in international exchange and, in his retirement,
carried out executive service assignments in Argentina, Indonesia and the Philippines.
