NAHRO's Statement on Introduction of the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act

Contact: Mary Barron, 202-289-3500 ext. 7223

WASHINGTON, June 28-- The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) welcomes the introduction of the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act and applauds House Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank, Rep. Maxine Waters, Rep. Jim Ramstad, and Rep. Christopher Shays for their leadership on this historic bipartisan legislation.

In addition to our ongoing efforts to preserve funding for important federal housing and community development programs, particularly the Public Housing, Housing Choice Voucher, and Community Development Block Grant programs, NAHRO vigorously supports the creation of a new and viable federal program to enable the production, rehabilitation, and preservation of affordable housing for low-income families. To that end, NAHRO and its members have strongly supported the inclusion of an affordable housing fund within the Government Sponsored Enterprise oversight reform bill (H.R. 1427) recently passed by the House. Local agencies have and can continue to play a vital role in meeting unmet housing needs of low and moderate income families in communities across the country. A dedicated funding source to accomplish this objective will further and enhance their ability to make meaningful progress in meeting our nation's housing needs.

We will review this legislation with our members and welcome the opportunity to share our comments and suggestions with the bills sponsors. NAHRO looks forward to working with Chairman Frank, Representative Waters, members of Congress and our colleagues in the housing and community development community on this critical issue.
