Walla Walla Housing Authority Executive Director Elected President of NAHRO

Contact: Mary Barron, 202-289-3500 ext. 7223

WASHINGTON, November 26-- Renée Rooker, Executive Director of the Walla Walla (Wash.) Housing Authority, has assumed leadership for the next two years of the nation's oldest housing and community development association. Rooker was elected President of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) in San Diego on October 28.

Rooker has led the Walla Walla Housing Authority as its Executive Director since 1991. During her tenure, the organization has expanded its portfolio through enriched partnerships and taking advantage of a wide range of financing mechanisms. The organization has received local and national recognition for housing and economic development programs.

Despite the funding challenges facing many housing and community development programs, Rooker begins her presidency with a sense of optimism, telling NAHRO members that "we have nothing but opportunities before us."

Rooker, who just completed a two-year term as NAHRO's Senior Vice President, has been a NAHRO member for more than 25 years, and in that time has filled a variety of leadership roles on the National & Regional levels.

"Ms. Rooker will be a great voice for us and a steady hand to take the helm of our organization," said NAHRO Executive Director Saul N. Ramirez, Jr.

The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, established in 1933, is a membership organization of 22,000 housing and community development agencies and professionals throughout the United States whose mission is to create affordable housing and safe, viable communities that enhance the quality of life for all Americans, especially those of low- and moderate-income. NAHRO's membership administers more than 3 million housing units for 7.6 million people.
