Opelika Housing Authority Executive Director Elected Senior Vice President
of NAHRO

WASHINGTON, November 26-- Akinola Popoola, Executive Director of the
Opelika (Ala.) Housing Authority, has assumed a leadership position with the
nation's oldest housing and community development association. Popoola was elected
Senior Vice President of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment
Officials (NAHRO) in San Diego on October 28, and will serve in that position
for the next two years.
Popoola has served as Executive Director of the Opelika Housing Authority since
1998. During his tenure at Opelika, he has expanded the Section 8 Housing Choice
Voucher and Family Self Sufficiency Programs. Popoola has leveraged the agency
funds and enhanced the authority's assets through various partnerships, bond
financing, low income tax credits, and utilities savings program. He has partnered
with the city government to improve physical condition and safety environment
of public housing developments, and to integrate public housing and their residents
into the larger community.
Popoola has been a NAHRO member for more than fifteen years. He recently completed
a two-year term as NAHRO's Vice President-International and Chairman for Southeastern
Regional Council (SERC) NAHRO's Historical/Archival Committee.

The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, established
in 1933, is a membership organization of 21,000 housing and community development
agencies and professionals throughout the United States whose mission is to
create affordable housing and safe, viable communities that enhance the quality
of life for all Americans, especially those of low- and moderate-income. NAHRO's
membership administers more than 3 million housing units for 7.6 million people.
