September 15, 2009 e-Briefing Session:

Making VAWA Implementation Work for Your PHA

1:30 - 3:00 PM (ET)

This special e-Briefing provides guidance for commissioners, executives, occupancy, resident services, and other staff of all sized Public Housing Agencies (PHAs) operating public housing and voucher programs.

The focus of this 90-minute e-Briefing is to:

  • Obtain useful information about the basic requirements of operating public housing and voucher programs in compliance with VAWA, and implementing Federal Register Notices.
  • Describe the Department of Justice’s new Domestic Violence Program, and describe possibilities for PHAs to take advantage of this program (including through recently awarded domestic violence grants).
  • Showcase PHA managers who are addressing domestic violence problems in their PHA to explain firsthand how they are doing it.
  • Provide tips, program options, and resources to help PHAs effectively use program funds and partnerships to strengthen their efforts in addressing domestic violence problems.

The presenters will be: Sharon M. Pitts, Deputy Assistant General Counsel, HUD; Susan Williams, Assistant Director, Office of Violence Against Women, U.S. Department of Justice; James Comer, Director of Field Operations for the Fall River Massachusetts Housing Authority, and other PHAs with promising practices in addressing domestic violence concerns. Pat Arnaudo, Director of Special Projects, NAHRO Professional Development, will be the moderator.

To attend the class:

  1. You will need access to a computer with a high speed Internet connection and a telephone with a standard phone line (preferably with speaker function/capacity).
  2. Registrants must have and provide an e-mail address to receive instructions for accessing the online class.
  3. Registration cancellation or substitution notices should be sent to professionaldevelopment@nahro.org.
