PACIFIC NORTHWEST REGIONAL COUNCIL

PACIFIC NORTHWEST REGIONAL COUNCIL-NAHRO CHALLENGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Pacific Northwest Regional Council of NAHRO provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors or those wishing to continue their education that might not otherwise have the opportunity of pursing a college education. The program is open to assisted housing residents of PNRC member agencies. A total of four scholarships are available each year.

Two scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors at $2,250 each over a four year period. The sponsoring housing agency must contribute $250 of this scholarship amount. One scholarship of up to 4 years is awarded to someone wishing to resume their education. The award is also up to $2,250. Finally, one scholarship is also awarded to an individual wishing to pursue a community college program of study. This scholarship covers a 2 year period at $1250.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Each applicant seeking a scholarship must complete the required application form. Information includes honors received, academic accomplishments, community and citizen/leadership activities, employment background, and hobbies/special interests. The applicant is required to sign a drug free certification, stating that they are currently drug free and will remain so through the duration of the scholarship. Applicants must include with their application a copy of their high school transcript, 2 letters of recommendation from high school officials, and one from a community leader. The applicant must also submit a 500 word essay on “why I wish to pursue a college education”.

AWARDS PROCESS
The process is coordinated by the PNRC Vice President for Member Services. Notice is sent to each PNRC member agency that the scholarship process has begun for the year. The agency is asked to notify their assisted housing residents of this opportunity and to actively solicit applications. Completed applications are sent to the appropriate NAHRO Chapter president by the required deadline. The Chapter president appoints a committee to review and rank the applications received from the scholarship seekers. Each Chapter may submit up to 2 Challenge, 1 continuing education, and 1 community college application to the Region for potential scholarship award. The Regional Vice President for Member Services and each Chapter President (or designee) form the final awards committee. Scholarships are judged on a point system including academic achievement; community involvement/citizenship/extra curricular activities; and essay/motivation. The awards are announced at the PNRC Annual Conference each spring.
