SOUTHEASTERN REGIONAL COUNCIL

FL - FLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF HOUSING AND REDEVELOPMENT EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship is awarded to residents of federally assisted housing or a recipient of assistance through the community development block grant program. All recipients must meet income requirements as defined by HUD for public/assisted housing and community development block grant targeted area recipients. The funds may be used for one year or longer if approved by the scholarship committee.

GA – GEORGIA ASSOCIATION OF HOUSING AND REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITIES (GAHRA) SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Academic and vocational/technical scholarships are awarded to graduating High School Seniors that have been residents of federally assisted housing for at least two years or a recipient of assistance through the Community Development Block Grant Program.

GA - DECATUR-DEKALB HOUSING AUTHORITIES SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarships from $500-2,000 each are provided annually based upon applications submitted to the Authority. Decatur routinely awards 2-3 new scholarships per year and DeKalb also routinely does 2-3.

In addition 2 years ago each Authority established a continuing scholarship that authorizes $1,000-2,000 each year to a previous awardee who is still enrolled and is in good standing with their college/university. This year several continuing scholarships were given for the 2002-03 school year.

Also, each graduating senior is given 75.00 and a graduation meal, whether they are going on to college or not as part of our Academic Awards program.

NC - THE CHARLOTTE HOUSING AUTHORITY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The program attempts to increase both an awareness of and the motivation to attend post secondary programs by providing scholarships. The program serves as a vehicle of hope to all young people who live in Charlotte’s conventional public housing communities with the desire to achieve, but who lack adequate financial means. The scholarship is based on need to any resident under the age of 22 who has been accepted to an accredited institution of higher learning.

NC - HOUSING AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF RALEIGH, COMMUNITY SERVICES

The scholarship program was established to create and administer a fund that will provide financial assistance to public housing authority youth who plan to enroll in a post-secondary educational institutional institution. Scholarships are awarded to youth based on financial need rather than academic merit, and are renewed annually. Payments are made so as not to diminish financial assistance from other sources.

SC - HOUSING AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF CHARLESTON: JACK C. MULLER SCHOLARSHIP

1 - $2000 scholarship awarded annually ($500 per year for up to 4 years)

  • Eligible applicants: graduating senior who is a resident or a Section 8 client of the Housing Authority of the City of Charleston
  • Selection based on:
  • Academic achievement and aptitude - 0 - 60 pts.
  • Demonstrated leadership - 0 - 10 pts.
  • School / Community leadership - 0 - 10 pts.
  • Financial Need - 0 - 20 pts.
  • Must submit current report card, letter of recommendation from guidance counselor or principal, and documentation of selection of accredited educational institution

TN - TENNESSEE ASSOCIATION OF HOUSING AND REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITIES SCHOLARSHIP

1 - $1250 Education Scholarship Award

  • Resident of Public Housing Authority for at least one year
  • High School Graduate
  • Transcript including SAT/ACT scores
  • Three letters supporting your character, achievements, and potential for education and career advancement (one must be from a school official)
  • A sponsorship letter from the executive director of a housing authority which must be an active member of TAHRA at the time of application
  • Must provide source and amount of other scholarship awards or grants
  • Continuing Requirements:
    • must remain a student in good standing
    • must continue the required course of study

VA - VIRGINIA ASSOCIATION OF HOUSING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT OFFICIALS (VAHCDO)

3 - $2000 two-year scholarships to graduating high school seniors living in any PHA that is a member in good standing of the Virginia Association of Housing and Community Development Officials.

VA - NEWPORT NEWS REDEVELOPMENT AND HOUSING AUTHORITY SCHOLARSHIP

1 - $1000 scholarship (per school year for four years)

  • Must be a resident of Section 8 or PHA who shows leadership potential for education and career advancement
  • Must have graduated, or expect to graduate, from an accredited high school
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Transcript
  • 3 letters of recommendation (1 must be from a school official)
  • Acceptance at accredited college or institution of higher learning
  • Must show promise of benefiting from a year at an institute of higher learning
  • Emphasis placed on character, leadership ability, community involvement and scholastic achievement
  • Essay of not more than 200 words addressing "What my experiences in living in public housing have provided for me in planning my career objectives."
  • Continuing Requirements:
    • Continue the required course of study
    • Comply with the rules of the institution attended
    • Maintain a satisfactory scholastic average

VA - CITY OF ROANOKE REDEVELOPMENT AND HOUSING AUTHORITY

6 - $1000 scholarships for high school seniors living in public housing or Section 8 housing

  • Must submit a copy of high school transcripts listing GPA and ranking.
  • Must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Provide 2 letters supporting the character, achievements, and potential for education and career advancement of the applicant. One of the letters must be from a school official.
  • Applicants must have maintained residence in public housing or Section 8 housing for the last six months
  • Must have graduated or expect to graduate in the current school year
  • Funds are to be utilized beginning in the fall of the school year following receipt of the scholarship
  • Recipient must attend an accredited university or college; this does not include vocational/technical or business schools
