NAHRO SUMMARY OF SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS
OFFERED BY NAHRO REGIONS AND CHAPTERS

SOUTHWEST REGIONAL COUNCIL

SOUTHWEST REGIONAL COUNCIL NAHRO

1 - $4000 scholarship( $1000 a year) for PHA resident
   - $2,500 divided between resident applicants for scholarships ranging from $250 - $1,000
   - $2000 divided between applicants who are family member of a PHA staff employee for scholarships ranging from $250 - $1,000
   - $1,500 divided between head of household applicants.

  • Resident applicant and family must reside in or receive direct housing benefits for the entire senior year (or at least 12 months prior to the application deadline) through any housing program administered by any agency who is a member in good standing of their state chapter and of SWRC-NAHRO
  • The family member of the applicant for the employee scholarship must have been employed by the agency for the entire senior year (or at least 9 months prior to the application deadline) and the agency must be a member in good standing of the respective state chapter and of SWRC NAHRO.
  • Applicant must have maintained an overall 3.0 GPA for the total of his/her high school career
  • Applicant must commit to enrolling in a college or vocational training program beyond high school graduation
  • Must submit all available and most recent high school transcripts (including current grades)
  • Must submit ACT Test Scores
  • Must submit two letters of recommendation from community leaders (not school counselors)
  • Must submit an essay (in own handwriting) on why the applicant wishes to pursue a college degree or vocational training (300-500 words)
  • Certification of residency by Executive Director

ARKANSAS NAHRO SCHOLARSHIPS

1 - $1250 Scholarship to the top graduating senior
1 - $1000 Scholarship to a graduating Senior
1 - $1250 Schioarship to the top Single Head of Household
1 - $1000 Scholarship to a Head of Household

  • Must be on Section 8 or living in public housing

KS - KANSAS CHAPTER OF NAHRO SCHOLARSHIPS

The 2002 Dru Thomas scholarship.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The applicant and their family must reside in a dwelling that receives section 8 benefits or reside in a public housing unit or reside in a dwelling that has received rehabilitation assistance during the past twelve months. The agency providing the assistance must be a member in good standing of kansas nahro.
  • The applicant must have maintained an overall 2.8 gpa for the total of their high school career. Head of households and previous winners that are in college must have an overall 2.6 gpa
  • The high school applicant must commit themselves to enrolling in a College/university or vocational training program beyond high school graduation. Head of household must have a minimum of 24 college credit hours.

SCHOLARSHIPS:

ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP:
This is a $500.00 one year scholarship available for students with a 3.6 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale their entire high school or college career.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP:
Two (2) $300.00 one year scholarships available for students with a 2.8 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale their entire high school career or a 2.6 GPA for Head of Household with a minimum of 24 college credit hours and pervious scholarship winners.

LA - LOUISIANA HOUSING COUNCIL INC. CHAPTER OF NAHRO

1 - $4000 scholarship( $1000 a year) for PHA resident

  • Applicant must have maintained an overall GPA for the total of his/her high school career
  • Applicant must commit to enrolling in a college or vocational training program beyond high school graduation
  • Must submit all available and most recent high school transcripts (including current grades)
  • Must submit ACT test scores
  • Must submit two letters of recommendation from community leaders (not school counselors)
  • Must submit an essay (in own handwriting) on why the applicant wishes to pursue a college degree or vocational training (300-500 words)

MO - MISSOURI NAHRO SCHOLARSHIP

1 - $2,000 Scholarship to dependents of employees of housing or CD agency
1 - $2,000 Scholarship to resident of public or assisted

We also renew the scholarship for a second year in the amount of $1000 if the student meets the criteria.

OK - OKLAHOMA NAHRO SCHOLARSHIP

1 - $500 scholarship (per semester)

  • Must reside in or receive direct housing assistance from a housing authority or a community development agency within the past year
  • Must be nominated by a member in good standing with the Oklahoma Chapter of NAHRO
  • Continuing Requirements:
    • Must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5
    • Must be a full-time student (13 hours minimum)

TX - TEXAS NAHRO SCHOLARSHIP

Minimum of $500 scholarships - Number of scholarships and individual amounts is based upon recommendation of the scholarship committee.

  • Must reside in public/assisted housing of a Texas-NAHRO Agency.

TX - HOUSING AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN

The vast majority of public housing residents terminate their education at or before the high school level. The Housing Authority of the City of Austin recognized that the means to break out of this poverty cycle is undeniable. Once funding became available the Housing Authority seized the opportunity to implement a scholarship program designed to assist residents in pursuit of higher education. In August 2001, the Dollars for Scholars"" program awarded fifteen public housing and Section 8 residents $50,600 in scholarships for post-secondary education.

TX - SAN ANTONIO HOUSING AUTHORITY FOUNDATION

This is a non-profit affiliate of the San Antonio Housing Authority created to provide educational and self sufficiency opportunities for the residents of public housing and Section 8 Housing Assistance Program. The foundation funds educational college scholarships annually for deserving High School seniors as well as Perfect Attendance awards for students in elementary through high school. The Foundation is funded through private donations as well as income from leases for communication equipment.
