August Advocacy, Week 3: Support the LIHTC!
First: thank you for all your efforts in these first two weeks of NAHRO’s August Advocacy. NAHRO members nationwide have engaged their elected officials, demanding that housing concerns become an emphasis for Congress. Please continue reaching out to your legislators, and help us achieve our goal of sending 2,500 letters to Capitol Hill this month.
NAHRO’s third week of August Advocacy is focused on supporting the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC), which allows states to incentivize developers to build affordable housing in communities of need. This tax credit has helped finance nearly three million apartments since 1986, providing affordable homes to more than six million low-income families.
Take action today by voicing your support for an expansion of the Low Income Housing Tax Credit. Earlier this year, Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) introduced S.548, The Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act. This bill, which would expand and strengthen the LIHTC by 50 percent, would address the current deficit in available affordable housing.
You can help this bill pass by writing to your senators and asking them to support the bill by co-sponsoring it. Once you have sent letters to your lawmakers, tweet at them to ensure that the strengthening of the LIHTC is a priority for Congress. You can find their Twitter handles on their websites. Here are some sample tweets:
