NAHRO Applauds Reintroduction of LIHTC Expansion Bill in Congress
April 17, 2025 — On April 8, NAHRO Legislator of the Year Congressman Darin LaHood (R-IL), reintroduced his Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act (AHCIA) in the U.S. House of Representatives. If passed, this bill would call for key improvements to the low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) and will support the financing of nearly 2 million new affordable homes in the U.S. The bill would do this by:
- Raising the number of credits allocated to each state by 50%
- Reducing the 50% test for private-activity bond homes to 25%
- Improve the LIHTC program to serve at-risk and underserved groups such as veterans, victims of domestic violence, and Americans in rural areas
Following the bill’s reintroduction, Rep. LaHood stated, “Congress must strengthen tools to drive investment into affordable workforce housing and expand housing options for hardworking families nationwide.” In the previous session of Congress, the AHCIA picked up 273 cosponsors from both sides of the aisle. In 2025, Rep. LaHood reintroduced this bill with the support of over 100 of his colleagues pledging support for the much-anticipated housing credit legislation.
NAHRO will continue to track the status of this bill and the pending reintroduction of its companion bill in the U.S. Senate by NAHRO Legislator of the Year Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR).
