As America faces an unprecedented default on its national debt, Congressional Leaders and the Biden Administration are still negotiating a deal to raise the debt limit. Last month, the U.S. House passed a bill that would lift the debt ceiling in exchange for an estimated 22% cut to domestic programs, including HUD. It would also cap spending at a 1% increase per year. If this bill becomes law, the Biden administration estimates that approximately 640,000 people currently receiving rental assistance would lose their subsidies (not to mention that 76 % of eligible people in need are still waiting for assistance).
