Lourdes Castro Ramírez serves as California’s Secretary of the Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency. She is charged with leading and overseeing departments responsible for expanding affordable housing, designing comprehensive solutions to end homelessness, enforcing civil rights protections, regulating banking and financial services, strengthening consumer protections, and licensing nearly 4 million working professionals.

Matthew Desmond is the Maurice P. During Professor of Sociology at Princeton University. A celebrated author, his newest book, Poverty, by America, will be released the week of NAHRO’s conference. Desmond’s 2016 Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, won the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Critics Circle Award, and Carnegie Medal, and PEN / John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction.  As principal investigator of The Eviction Lab, Desmond’s research focuses on poverty in America, city life, housing insecurity, public policy, racial inequality, and ethnography.
