Provide Necessary Resources to American Indian, Alaska Native, and Hawaiian Homeland Communities

National Housing Framework

Updated July 10, 2025

Congress has not reauthorized the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act (NAHASDA) since 2013. Although Congress has continued to fund NAHASDA programs each year, funding has remained level, meaning that increased costs due to inflation are not being met. Activities eligible under NAHASDA assistance include new construction, rehabilitation, and acquisition of affordable housing. Funds can also be used for infrastructure updates, various support services, and certain types of community facilities. Congress must reauthorize NAHASDA to ensure that American Indian, Alaska Native, and Hawaiian Homeland communities have the tools necessary to provide much needed housing to their members.

Recommendation: HUD must increase its NAHASDA budget request to address growing costs.
