HUD Secretary Turner Testifies at House THUD Subcommittee Hearing Today, Senate Tomorrow
June 10, 2025 — Today, HUD Secretary Scott Turner appeared before the House THUD subcommittee, the first of two hearings this week, to defend President Trump’s FY 26 Budget Request to Congress and respond to questions from members. Chairman Steve Womack and Ranking Member Jim Clyburn pressed Secretary Turner for more details on how the Trump Administration’s proposal to slash HUD’s budget by over half would ensure low- to middle-income families and individuals remain housed.
Secretary Turner’s time before the subcommittee today reflects the view of the administration and affordable housing critics in Congress that HUD has been bogged down with bureaucracy and has lost sight of its mission and that the Trump administration’s budget would get the department back on track. Several members of the subcommittee pressed Turner on his claims to bring about a “paradigm shift” at HUD built on sweeping cuts as opposed to reforming and refining existing programs.
In a hearing that included few budgetary figures, details, and concrete proposals, Secretary Turner alleged that the current system did not result in good stewardship of taxpayer funds. The Administration has proposed significant cuts for the department despite an ever-growing housing affordability crisis, increasing housing supply shortfall, and decades of backlog. Many members questioned how these cuts would improve our affordable housing crisis.
