NAHRO Names Thomas Sheehan 2026 Commissioner of the Year
October 22, 2026 — On October 16, the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) named Thomas Sheehan, Vice Chair of the Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority of Newport (RI), the 2026 Commissioner of the Year at the National Conference and Exhibition in Denver, Colorado.
“Housing authority commissioners are leaders, advocates and ambassadors all at the same time,” said Mark Thiele. “As a board member, Tommy Sheehan has built and expanded partnerships with many organizations, helped secure a $1 million grant to provide free wifi to the housing authority’s residents, and shared the authority’s good work with local media and the community. Congratulations, Tommy — well done!”
In addition to his tireless work on behalf of the housing authority, Sheehan is a NAHRO-certified commissioner who believes in continued professional development and knowledge sharing with his peers nationwide. Serving as Vice-Chair of the Newport Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners, he brings both lived experience and a deep understanding of how safe, stable housing can transform lives — just as it has transformed his own.
For nearly a decade, Sheehan has worked tirelessly to strengthen connections between residents, staff, local and state leaders, universities, corporations, philanthropic organizations, and community-based agencies. His collaborative approach has fostered impactful partnerships, including initiatives with Salve Regina University to bring on-site nursing care, social work interns, and wellness programs directly to residents. Tommy also led a digital equity initiative securing more than $1 million in funding to bring free high speed wireless internet to residents of every housing authority property.
Sheehan’s leadership extends beyond housing, championing age-friendly communities, and creating opportunities for residents of all ages. Through his advocacy, he regularly engages the Mayor, City Council, Governor, and national delegates, ensuring they see firsthand the transformative power of housing and resident services.
